Maya Thet

Maya Thet is a Program Specialist with the Office of Head Start at the Administration for Children and Families. In her current position, Maya's duties include the monitoring and oversight of Head Start grantees, reviewing and approving funding applications, the enhancement of program operations and performing risk assessments. As a former Presidential Management Fellow at NIH's National Cancer Institute (NCI), Maya has experience in the areas of program evaluation, communications, congressional relations and strategic planning.

Maya currently serves as an adviser on Columbia University's "Family, Youth and Children Field of Practice Advisory Committee;" however, she has worked with many non-profits over the years in official and unofficial roles. Her intertwining interests in education, public health and international development originate from her undergraduate years, in which she led a student group that provided free SAT workshops for low-income teens. In 2005, Maya traveled to rural Tanzania to teach HIV/AIDS awareness to adolescents and adults in local communities. Subsequently, as a student at Columbia University's School of Social Work, Maya worked closely with adolescents in the juvenile justice system, supported the policy arm of the National Human Services Assembly, and assisted International Movement ATD Fourth World in advocacy efforts at the United Nations.

Maya holds a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Arts in History, as well as a minor in Human Biology, from Stanford University. Maya received the Stanford University President's Scholar award in 2001.
